LTO-9 archival and long-term preservation in partnership with Filmoteca Española and El Deseo catalog preservation through Mediapro Post and Telson
Here is how this works in practice. Archive and preservation for productions finishing in Spain sits inside the country's national-archive lineage. The Filmoteca Española (Spanish Film Archive, founded 1953 in Madrid under the Ministerio de Cultura) is one of Europe's deepest film archives. With collaborative restoration and preservation partnerships ready for both heritage Spanish cinema (Buñuel, Berlanga, Saura, Erice, Almodóvar) and today's feature releases entering long-term preservation. We set up LTO-9 (or LTO-8 / LTO-7 where production budget needs) tape archive at Mediapro Post Barcelona, Telson Madrid, Apache Digital, Deluxe Madrid, and Madrid Lab.
Here is the short of it. With LTFS-formatted archive masters geographically redundant across multi-site storage facilities. Source preservation covers ARRIRAW, RED R3D, Sony Venice X-OCN, Blackmagic RAW, ProRes 4444 XQ, DNxHR HQX. And DPX/EXR finishing intermediates from across the production lifecycle — camera originals, on-set DIT mezzanines. VFX EXR plates and renders from The Mill Spain / Twin Pines / Crater Studio / Mediapro Studios VFX / Userhats / Apache Digital, color-graded masters. And audio session stems from Tecnison / Mediapro Post / Sonoblok.
Here is the breakdown. Preservation packages ship with full PBCore / EBU Core / SMPTE RDD-9 metadata, MD5 / SHA-256 checksum verification at every migration step. IMF AS-02 / AS-11 wrapper packages for the IMF future-proofed master deliverable. And SMPTE-DPX or EXR-OpenEXR uncompressed reference sequences for the absolute archive master. The El Deseo (Almodóvar's production company) preservation pipeline is one of the deepest catalog-preservation models in the Spanish industry — multi-generation backup. Format migration, and active monitoring against bit-rot. And we apply the same methodology to today's productions. RTVE Documentos TV archive workflows, Movistar+ first-series long-term retention.
Here is what that looks like on the ground. And theatrical-release post-distribution catalog preservation all route through the same hybrid LTO-tape + cloud-object-storage architecture (typically AWS Deep Archive or Azure Archive paired with on-site LTO redundancy) making sure decade-plus accessibility independent of any single site or sites.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is LTO tape archiving?
LTO (Linear Tape-Open) is the industry standard for long-term media archiving. LTO tapes offer exceptional longevity (30+ years), high capacity, and low cost per terabyte. We use LTFS (Linear Tape File System) which makes tapes as easy to use as hard drives while providing the security benefits of offline storage.
How do you ensure data integrity over time?
We implement multiple safeguards including checksum verification at every stage, redundant copies stored in different locations, environmental monitoring of storage facilities, and regular integrity checks. Our systems automatically flag any issues so they can be addressed before data loss occurs.
What happens when formats become obsolete?
We proactively monitor format lifecycles and plan migrations before obsolescence becomes critical. Our preservation strategy includes maintaining access to legacy playback systems and systematically migrating content to current formats when appropriate, ensuring your content remains accessible regardless of technology changes.
Can you help organize and catalog existing archives?
Yes, we offer complete digital asset management services including cataloging existing archives, creating searchable metadata databases, and implementing MAM systems. We can help transform disorganized media libraries into well-structured, easily accessible archives with comprehensive search capabilities.
